Creative visuals can only come to life when completed with skill in a respected medium. That is where traditional methods can outshine digital. The most rewarding example in my repertoire has to be painting.

With a busy schedule, I practice painted media in three ways:

Canvas Painting:

Painting directly to canvas is the most 'free' and 'uplifting' type of work I ever attempt.

Pre-planned pieces tend to become over-ambitious, but with enough dedication, I can often surpass my original expectations.

My canvas pieces are almost always created with acrylics using a time consuming dry-brush method.

Cel Painting:

I use this traditional animation technique to create some very different results than that of most painters.

Plastic based painting is a very meticulous process. Blocks of colours are layered atop one another and left to dry intermittently. The reverse of the painting surface bears black distinct line work to offer comic effects.

The shading technique relies heavily upon light sources and often require a 'key' or 'Douga' to prevent confusion. In this way, Cel painting is similar to Paint by numbers.

Results depend on the drama of each picture. A boring picture with bold colours cannot outshine textures or special effects.

Model Painting:

Somewhat less creative than the aforementioned comes the treatment of three dimensional models and display art.

Hand painted figures tend to capture character and atmosphere much better than their factory line counterparts complimenting their sculptors talent.

Painting High grade / detailed figures can be a tedious venture.

Parts are often treated before and after assembly (Once again, experience is tough to teach).

As with everything else, I choose to paint for entertainment value, giving my viewers what they want to see.

Hopefully one day, I might gain the confidence to 'go all out' on a canvas piece without conviction.
