Sketch work is the cornerstone of every Illustration.
Almost all work begins with small concepts called thumbnails. They primarilly plan composition.
Once a sketch takes shape, it is cleaned up. It is during the clean up that correct details should be added.
My preferred method is simply tracing from the original using a light-box.
Later comes shading in one of many forms. Most popular methods are Cross Hatching, Fading, Screen Toning and Cel.
Character sketching tends to be a heavier process than for backgrounds since they look best with drama.
A pose can say much about personality, temperament, balance and purpose.
Having studied the idealistic portrayal of human anatomy in the entertainment industry, I often fall back on reliable eastern stances and Anime characteristics. Exaggerated features are abundent throughout my sketch approach.
